Join us in preventing Child Abuse in southern New Mexico
Stop
the cycle of violence.
The emergency room nurse held the battered, dying
baby in her arms. "We must stop this from happening again,"
she thought.
Indeed we must.
Between
July 2001 and March 2005, seven children in our community died of
abuse. In 2002, all New Mexico's three child abuse deaths occurred
in Dona Ana county. In 2003, there were 414 substantiated cases
of child abuse in Dona Ana County. Including unreported cases, the
actual number is thought to be closer to 1,500.
The cries of these children demand a response,
they plead with all of us to join together and support nurturing
environment for our children.
ChildSafe/NinosSeguros is a community wide effort
in response to these cries.
The primary responsibility for children's well-being
rests with parents, but they cannot do it alone. All families benefit
from strong, supportive neighborhoods and communities. We all play
a role in helping children thrive. Research shows parents and other
caretakers with resources and support are more likely to provide
safe and healthy homes for their children.
ChildSafe/NinosSeguros will fulfill its mission
by increasing resources and support available to those who care
for children through:
- Serving as an advocate for child and family
support providers and assisting them to acquire needed human and
financial resources.
- Bringing together such service providers to
increase coordination and define where services are still needed.
- Encouraging and supporting the development of
new programs to fill these service gaps.
- Increasing awareness of such services be providing
and promoting clear, easily accessible information.
Together, as a community we can do something about
child abuse. Please join your southern New Mexico neighbors in making
this a safe community for our children.
